Becky Braithwaite is dealing with the challenges typical of a first year university student. Being on her own for the first time, learning to live companionably with strangers, making new friends and fitting in, and oh yeah – being a student. But what happened before, those terrible events of June 16th, 2018, make everything seem unattainable.
Consumed with exhaustion from debilitating insomnia, Becky wants a new start. She will fulfill her brothers’ dreams and live the life he couldn’t. Determined to overcome her past, she very intentionally tries to create a new life with good friends, good grades and a good nights’ sleep. But no matter how hard she tries, she can’t seem to escape the past that haunts her.
Almost from the beginning, I thought I knew how it would end. That usually means I’ve already lost interest, but I really wanted to keep reading this one. I liked the characters, I liked the storyline. Becky’s struggles with grief and insomnia make her a sympathetic character without being annoying. The author does a great job in taking us with Becky on her journey towards trying to overcome the impossible and make sense of it all. I was rooting for her.
My imagination started to run wild right alongside Becky in the library when she was wondering if she was losing her mind, in danger, or haunted! I think my favorite thing about how the author writes this story is that you think it is predictable and then out of nowhere there is an unexpected twist. But it’s fast and at first you’re not even sure if something actually happened, so by the time you get to the end, you don’t even see it coming!
A fun, psychological thriller that will keep you on the hook right up to the end and then make you think you need to read the last chapter over again!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author via Voracious Readers Only.
